Broken Jug by Frank Stella

‘Sense of place’

The famous American artist Frank Stella designed the work of art Broken Jug; a 14m high and 45 tons heavy work of art which includes a dynamic interplay of lines. As early as 2001, he started work on the construction of a stadium in Miami. There it was refused. After that it would come to Cherbourg (France), but money was the bummer. It would cost three million to buy it, but they didn't want that.

Joop Mulder, who passed away in January of this year (2021), is the founder of Oerol and creator of the 'Sense of Place' concept. Sense of place makes the unique values of nature, landscape and cultural history of the special UNESCO World Heritage Wadden area visible to a wider audience with cultural landscape projects; Joop Mulder wanted to integrate the image into the Sense of Place story.

The entire college of B&W then set out to keep Broken Jug in Harlingen. On March 18, 2021, Wde municipal council of Harlingen approved the definitive placement of the artwork on a new square near the island parking area, at the Tjerk Hiddessluizen, as a 'gate to the city'.

"Sense of place"
Joop Mulder (1953-2021) was committed to raising awareness and celebrating the Wadden Sea and the surrounding area.

“Sense of Place makes the invisible visible. The slow, unstoppable processes to which the Wadden area is subject. The beauty of this beautiful UNESCO World Heritage Site and its almost forgotten history. This is being rediscovered and enlarged with cultural landscape projects.”

Naturally dynamic

With the lighting plan for the Broken Jug, we aim to align with the core values of the UNESCO site and create a sense of place for The Broken Jug - both celebrating Frank Stella's works and connecting them
